Everyone is jumping on the MP3 bandwagon these days, and LG has done just that with its new M6100 music phone. In a pearl white finish, the M6100 looks more like a portable MP3 player than a phone. Boasting a feature set similar to the recently reviewed LG S5200, the M6100 ups the ante with a total of 128MB of on board memory for your favorite MP3s. The stereo headset that is included in the sales package works as a remote for the music application, and also as a 3.5mm jack adaptor for you to use your favorite headphones with the phone.
The M6100 is a tri-band (900/1800/1900MHz) phone, sporting the same 1.3-megapixel camera found in the S5200.
So how does the M6100 fare in our tests? Let's find out.
Physical Aspects
At first glance, it is simply amazing that LG has designed the M6100 to look so much like a portable MP3 player. The pearl white finish on the phone is very attractive, and the plastics used for the phone are top quality. The sliding mechanism is solid and there were no creaks or squeaks found on our review unit.
On the front of the M6100 you will find the d-pad, flanked by the left and right soft keys, the call key, and end key. The end key doubles as the power button. The cancel key is located in the centre just below the d-pad. The d-pad has a polished finish that enhances the MP3 player look that the M6100 is designed for. Although small in size, all the keys are responsive and comfortable to use. The d-pad is responsive and works just fine.
On the left side of the M6100 you will find the volume keys. On the right, the dedicated MP3 application key, which also doubles as the camera shutter key, is located just below the headphone jack, which is protected by a rubber flap. On top of the phone, there is an eyelet for you to attach your favorite wrist strap or lanyard. The bottom of the phone houses the connector for the charger and USB cable. A rubber flap also protects this connector.
Sliding the phone open, the white backlit keypad comes into view. The keypad feels a little cramped but it is responsive and provides good tactile feedback. Overall, the keypad worked as expected and I have no complaints here. Turning the phone around, you will notice the 1.3-megapixel camera, which was hidden when the phone was closed. The LED flash light and a self-portrait mirror are also found on the back of the handset.
Measuring 89.7mm x 40mm x 19.9mm (3.53" x 1.57" x 0.78"), the M6100 is a very compact phone and will fit into any pocket very nicely. My guess would be the target market for this phone is the ladies, as I'm positive the phone's petite size will definitely appeal to this demographic.
